Calling Major Tom…

Do you remember September 11? How about when that spaceship crashed last year? Do you remember turning on the radio during those time periods? If you did, and you listened to a crappy station that plays crappy music (as they all do) you probably remember the musical montages with news clips edited in.

In case you don’t live in Houston, we have a little team called The Astros and they are in some playoffs or something. Well, today, as I was driving down the backroads to go to the roads that leads to the road to the crazy doctor, I heard a montage.

For the Astros. It was Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” with clips from recent games edited in. And, at that very moment, I thought I might vomit my colon up.

Yes, you heard that right. I almost opened my mouth and had a colon go all the way up and exit because the sound of “Lose Yourself” and Astros games edited together was just That Bad.

Why? Why oh radio DJs who think they are awesome? I remember hearing after that spaceship crash that song they sing on Mr. Deeds (the movie) about Major Tom and he’s a pilot and there’s an engine and news clips about that spaceshuttle being gone.

Can we not just deal with our excitement or grief without a musical tribute? Do they HAVE to add this in? Hello, to me, I find this to be insult to injury. If say, a president were to be asassinated (hi secret service! Hey Dick Cheney! Totally kidding!) would we have a montage? If it were a liberal station, would we hear “Shout! Pick your heels up and shout!” or if it were a more conservative one, would we hear “I shot the sherriff?”

I am demanding action! Forget taxes and wars and abortions! I demand action to end the Awful Musical Montage!

  1. oh, i hear you! i do NOT like those montages. the worst one i remember is when that song by Vitamin C was popular as a graduation song…"as we go on/we remember/all the times we/had together". *GAG* and they mixed in kids from all different high schools making “shout outs” or some dumb crap through the whole song. they remixed it lots of times, too, just so they could fit in everyone that called it, saying crap like “it’s been a great ride, here’s to _____ high school".

    ack.

  5. Yeah, I heard that too. Wasn’t it on 97.9 or 104 or something? I was almost home and flicking through the stations in the hopes of finding something groovy to get John-Malachy and I through the next couple of hours, and here’s this song with people talking and Astros and a song and what the hell? It did really suck though. Like a cheap attempt at pulling your heart strings. Like a really badly edited episode of Extreme Makeover or something, that just can’t manage to pull that tear out of your eye. But hasn’t the weather been fantabulous the last couple of days?
