Ellie’s Ninth Month

Dear Ellie,

Yesterday, you turned nine months old. I meant to write something THEN, but let me teach you an important lesson: When you have a baby, things don’t always happen the way you want them to. Anyway, so you’ve been “out” as long as you were “in” and can I tell you that I enjoy you much more now that you aren’t taking residence up in my uterus?

Girl, I can’t tell you how much your Daddy and I love you. If I did, I don’t think you’d believe me. I have this love that is so deep, so primal, for you. I just want to snatch you up in my arms and gobble your little cheeks and kiss you and twirl your hair around my fingers.

You, however, have better things to do than let me gobble you all day long. You have to eat stuff off the carpet, and mess with the DVD player and find papers I hid from you and eat them. Speaking of eating, yesterday the doctor drew blood from your toe. She put a cotton swab and a bandaid over it to stop the bleeding. Before I could say “choking hazard,” you grabbed that bloody band-aid and shoved it in your mouth.

You are such a sweet, happy baby. You are always laughing and cheering and clapping. People often stop us while we are out to say what a happy baby you are. Yesterday I resisted the urge to say “It’s because all that crack we put in her bottle.”

I don’t put crack in your bottle, even though people have told me to dip a pacifier in whiskey for you. I didn’t do that either. You’ll have to wait for college to do that. By the way, you are going to college. Just so you know.

You have seemed to discover your daddy this month. Now he’s not just some guy who hands you to mommy, but he is someone you want to play with, want to be held by. You are such a daddy’s girl, possibly because he sneaks you junk food while we are out to eat.

Speaking of eating, you will eat ANYTHING. Consider this evidence that you have eaten turnips, brussel sprouts and asparagus and liked it. So don’t try to tell me that you don’t like them because right now you’re all “yum!” and “gimmee more!”

Except you don’t say that because your only word still is “mama.” Fine with me! Who’s that daddy guy, anyway?

You have changed so much in these past nine months. You went from a little sleepy blob to a person who laughs and cries and walks along the furniture. You climb things now and let us know when you want something. Oh good grief, do you ever let us know. Note to Ellie: Stop the whining.

I love you so much. You have made my life so wonderful and so happy and I love everything about you. So, if I end up having a zillion babies, know it is your fault because I just wanted more like you.

Indeed! That was wonderful, SJ. Glad you are off to a great start in this world, Ellie! You have one wonderful mother as you can tell (later) by how she expresses her love for you. Keep giving her those kisses and hugs. Every Mommy deserves them. And they are always fun to get. ;)

Gorgeousness. Can’t wait to meet her. And here’s the first comment without a smiley face. My real face is smiling, at all of Ellie’s cuteness.

It’s weird, but I love Ellie and I’ve never even met her!

I meant to ask you this on the phone the other day, but my IG forgot… Does she have teeth yet? Because Gabby doesn’t have any yet and it’s freaking me the hell out!

Yay Ellie! Dang, she looks more and more like you every month I think. So cool that she eats lots of veggies…and her dad’s ear.

She’s getting more and more beautiful. Ryan is one happy little guy. And I tell my girls all the time that nobody likes a whiner.

She is just adorable. Can you move here so she can grow up to marry Boy Terror?
It made me just a little sad to see the measures you’ve had to take to protect your pictures. But that cutie pie shines right through anyway!

She’s lovely. And your husband is lucky. There’s just nothing like the time when a daughter first pays attention to her daddy.
